New research indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
