The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
